About us
Welcome to flyfishingadvice.net. The site is owned by Charles Jarrold, and his media company, Jarrold Media Ltd. You can find out more about Jarrold Media by visiting the site at www.jarroldmedia.com. There's lots more info there, but in a nutshell, we're web development and targeted communications experts, particlarly using the joomla content management system. We love joomla! because it's fully responsive (this means it'll restyle depending on the device you're using to view the site), and it's as easy to keep a site updated as using MS Word. Joomla is a little technical to set up in the first place, but once this has been done, it's a synch. We do set-up, training and hosting, so get in touch if you want some help or advice.
So, why is this site so simple?
This is a single page site (at the moment), so joomla would be overkill. It's just here to help you, and frankly, to be a bit of a placeholder. My time is better spent brushing up on web (and fishing!) skills. Maybe I'll spend some time on css (ie formatting) when I have a moment...So where's the flyfishing advice?
Well, not here at the moment, but if you do want some advice (or fishing company!), let me know. Follow this link to Jarrold Media, and ping me a contact.
What kinds of fishing to I enjoy?
It's taken me time to realise it, but apart from the chance to spend time in some beautiful surroundings (and that certainly doesn't mean exotic!), I've come to realise that it's a combination of the challenge of reading water, and the uncertainty of what might be there that really interests me. Don't get me wrong, I love all fishing, and dont' have time for fishing snobbery - this is better than that etc. No. It's just different, and we all (luckily) like different things (people, food, places, politics, gods even). Amen to that!
So, now that's out the way, here are my favourite types of fishing
Favourite fishing - no order of preference!
- flyfishing
- for trout and grayling on a rocky stream in Wales, or the Southwest
- the same, but on a wild nettley chalk stream on summer evening
- fishing poppers for largemouth bass in the USA
- dibbling flies in a drifting boat on a loch in Scotland
All the rest: out in the boat for bass and mackerel; trotting a float with my son for grayling and brownies in the Avon and Stour. Chuking a plug for pike (great fun that). So, as I said, it's all….mighty….fine!
Resources
I don't have the time right now to keep adding content to this, so to save time and effort, here are some great resources (yuk, how corporate does that sound?!). Let's put that another way - here are some links to keep you entertained for a few hours, screw your produtivity, & generally make you wish you weren't at work!
Best Fishing Blogs
Midcurrent USA based, but a great collection of fishing articles and photography.
Best Fishing Books
If you're starting out for trout, sea trout or salmon, Charles Bingham's book of that name is pretty good. Maybe I'll put an Amazon link up in due course. Reg Ryghni's book "grayling" is a classic. George Melly's "Hooked" is absolutely fantastic - more of an autobiog than how-to, but really really worth getting hold of.
Fishing Shops I love (that stay true to their (our?) mission:)
Of the big chains, very few…sadly. But a few exceptions:)
- Snowbee offer great kit at a fair price - and they produce a lovely printed brochure that I'm always happy to see.
- Avon Angling are always worth a visit if you're passing Ringwood on your way anywhere. Nice people, and a proper fishing shop. Their website could do with a refresh mind you!
- Come on Orvis, stop trying to flog me too expensive clothing & get back to your roots - reduce the prices of your mid and low range rods and reels, & you might be back in the game (I have a frequent flyer 8'6" 7 piece #4 weight that's once of my fav's - but it's now a nuts price). Your call Orvis, as I want to like you!
Where to fish
- Dorset Stour - far better than you might expect. Fishing Day tickets here.
- Dorset Avon - as good as you'd expect, prettier, but harder (now that's a sign of class!).
- Dorset Frome - Brilliant, not easy to get tickets for, or to fish.
- Dorset Allen - same as Frome, not easy, but you'll rarely blank if you know what you're doing.
- Irfon and Wye for trout and grayling (as beautiful as anything you can see anywhere. For help learn from Kim Tribe, one of the bes guides we've come across
- Devon and Cornwall - use the rivers trust passport scheme - what a fab idea, great inexpensive sustainable fishing!
If you want help knowing where to fish these, or how to approach them, drop me a line (use jarroldmedia or twitter), & I'll point you in the right direction.
Follow me on twitter @charlesjarrold, grab a rod, & I'll help you with your fishing & website!
Thanks & please get in touch!
